It's almost a miracle they've assembled the team they have. The defence: all one-year deal guys and Rielly on a sweetheart deal, took some serious ingenuity to put together without spilling over the cap.

But if you're going to have a Matthews/JT two-headed dino at centre, you have to make tough choices elsewhere. Nylander occupies the Kessel space in this Crosby/Malkin comparison, which means no room for another 10M guy unless you make hard choices. At a certain point Nylander, Kerfoot, Johnsson, Kapanen all have to be on the table. Are they really worth keeping over Marner? Of course, who knows how if this is more than just contract negotiations and there's actual bad blood...

Wonder if frustrated GMs might start trading their disgruntled RFAs for each other. Can't sign Marner? Swap him for Laine and try your luck with him!

Yeah, it may have been a mistake to sign JT to that massive deal. After that, no one was gonna take a discount. Couple in some really bad moves by Lou on his way out and you have a very unmanageable cap situation.

It is the Matthews deal not Tavares that is the wrench in the Marner negotiations.

Now Dubas has said that he hopes to sign Marner by Oct 2nd season opener and will not talk about it again until he is signed.

Marner signed six years 10.8 something per and again way to much. I guess if other teams have to live by this new standard it could be fine in a couple years for the Leafs but if they are the outlier for these deals and no one else is stuck with them the Leafs are cooked as soon as next off season. In a way I consider the Point and Rantanen contracts to be very telling for the Leafs longer term competitiveness.

Wonder what this means for the Rantanen contract. $9-$10 AAV or more?

In a bubble they are worth the same pretty much, doubt that happens though.

If they get Mikko to sign for $9 million per on a relative long-term deal I’ll be happy.

What about $10M per? Have any numbers been floating around? Apparently the Boeser camp rejected 6 x $7M AAV at the draft, so the Marner deal helps that cause.

I'll be less happy, but there's really not a deal out there that I'll be unhappy about. So long as he shows the hell up by the time the puck drops, I'll be okay with whatever.

I read there were 2 offer sheets Marner rejected. Any word on the teams?

I read Minny and Columbus, but can't confirm.

Personally, I'd like to see Rantanen signed for something like $12M x kabillion years.

Not a top notch offensive talent but made a good interception in neutral zone and the D did a good job getting a stick on it. My only complaint is he gave away shooting position while looking for the pass. maintain a shooting position till you pass rather than let the goalie bail out on worrying about a shot.

Anyway did not see it as a huge fail, just a minor one.

Oh no, he's good...I am still a regular on HF Boards and I'm about the only Kerfoot defender on there. He's very good defensively in terms of puck retrieval and is a fantastic playmaker, it's just his preference to pass that will sometimes annoy you. Regardless, I maintained because of depth issues that he was overworked in Colorado and if he remains a bottom six guy he'll be fine. He will get that opportunity in Toronto. My only question is whether he will be better suited on the wing or at center. He's decent at faceoffs but I think he's better on the wing based on what I"ve seen of him.
