Agreed. They lost so much organizational IQ when they canned Laurence Gilman.

On another note, saw that GMJB sold his Ontario Street condo for $5.2M (bought for $3.6M in 2015).

Wonder if MrBumpNGrind brokered the sale

No one has come even close to signing FA Ben Hutton yet. He's likely considered a tertiary d-man at this point and may land somewhere when training camping cuts happen or if injuries kick in around preseason. There's always Europe too.

Hearing VAN has extended GM Jim Benning. He was heading into the final season of his current contract.

Nooooooooooooo......What kind of fuck freak joke is this?

It better not be more than a one year extension on top of this season or the Aquilini’s need to go full stop.

Missed playoffs four years running and a 175-186-49 record over Benning’s 5 years. With a record like that why wouldn't they want to extend him?
:haha:

I read that too, but then these owners have more money than brains, it seems. I can't believe how many are happy to see this get done since he has so magnificently stocked the pipeline...

EDIT: Heard he was extended for 3 years... Is that confirmed?

As Tom has mentioned, the recent Myers signing could be Benning's next Eriksson contract, especially over the final 2 years.

Gudbranson for McCann, Joulevi over Tkachuk, Virtanen over Nylander, trading away draft picks like water. Beagle, Sutter. Poor cap & asset management. Dire pro scouting. Utica....the list goes on. Any management group ought to be able to find 3 core players in 5-6 years by picking at the top of the draft.

Suppose if all Aquilini wants is mediocrity and mere playoff contention every year, he's found his man as there are far too many mistakes and deficiencies for this group to build a perennial Cup contender.

The Canucks GM has also repeatedly faced criticism for adding long-term, big-money contracts in both trades and free agency that gobbled up cap space but failed to offer on-ice support for the club’s young talent.

One deal that’s drawn ire is the signing of left-winger Loui Eriksson, who came to Vancouver as a free agent in 2016, signing a US$36-million deal. At the time, Benning called the Swedish forward "an elite scorer and play maker with great defensive instincts."

The 34-year-old has yet to crack a 30-point season with the Canucks. Last year he tallied 11 goals and 18 assists in 81 games.

Some of Vancouver’s trades made under Benning’s tenure haven’t panned out as planned.

During the 2015 off-season, Vancouver dealt forward Nick Bonino and defenceman Adam Clendening to the Pittsburgh Penguins for centre Brandon Sutter, who Benning dubbed "a foundation piece."

Sutter has since struggled to stay healthy, playing just one full season in 2016-17 where he racked up 34 points. Last year, the 30-year-old was sidelined first with a shoulder injury in late October, then with a lower body ailment that eventually required surgery for a sports hernia. He saw action in 26 games and tallied just six points in 2018-19.

Benning was also responsible for dealing former first-round pick Jared McCann to the Florida Panthers for defenceman Erik Gudbranson in May 2016. The GM admitted at the time that the price was steep, but said the trade added a top-four blue liner to his team.

Goldy signed...

Low-risk signing. He can be buried in the minors, if he sucks. And if he does well, then he's an asset that could be made available later. He's a depth guy at best.

Anyone have news on where Ben Hutton landed? Surely he has a job somewhere this season?

Not much, apparently he was drawing interest but he's not been invited to camp on a PTO, nor has he signed a deal. Closest thing I could find is that the Kings seemed very interested in bringing him in, but that was back on August 30.

With Jake, it's not physical, it's completely mental... I'm not so sure he has a CPU that can keep up.

On another note, Landon Ferraro got a training camp invite/PTO. I think he's destined for Utica if at all...

Boeser seen visiting his dying father today in Burnsville, MN. What this kid continues to endure is nothing short of heroic. The contract may just have to wait.

Quote:
In 2010, the same year his mom died of lung cancer and his dad died of pancreatic cancer, Duke Boeser was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In 2012, a half-mile from his home, Duke was in a major car accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury, several broken bones and a lacerated spleen. In the spring of 2017, Duke was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer and underwent radiation, chemotherapy and an operation that removed part of his left lung.

By that September, he was cancer-free, but this past June, Duke, now 58, received the news that his lung cancer had returned, only it metastasized to his liver and spots were found on his ribs and sternum.

“That was really tough to go through because the guy’s been through so much,” Brock, 22, said. “Like how much more can somebody take?”

Lebrun reports that talks have heated up within the last 24 hours between Boeser camp and Canucks brass.

Boeser doesn't really have much leverage here except to sit which benefits neither side. No qualifying offers allowed under his status, nor is there a December 1st deadline for signing. He can just sit and sit which means he doesn't play or ask for a trade, but the Canucks are under no obligation to move him.

Predictions? Either a 3 year bridge deal for around $21M or 6 year deal for around $45-48M AAV.

What do you know. Just like that, The Flow returns to the Canucks lineup. 3 years $5.9M AAV which coincides with the expiration of the Eriksson contract. Team friendly contract, but he may become very expensive down the road.

$7.5M Qualifying offer. :Butch:

That seems to be the model for the bridge deal now. Reasonable AAV but backloaded so that the qualifier is around $7 million.

I suppose you can thank Brock for just wanting to get back to work, Jimmy Boy for being a tough negotiator, and Shotgun Jake for leaving that door open so Brock's rookie year got cut short (and I'd argue that injury hampered him a bit the following season).
