Those would be great, given the current run on toilet paper.

Mirror image of themselves. Prediction: Matthew Barzal lights it up in front a hometown crowd and the Isles go onto beat the Nucks 4-2 including an empty netter by Barzal to seal it late.

He certainly played well, but oh, how I wish your prediction was correct. Instead, it was the other local Islander who scored. Andrew Ladd with what I read was his first goal since Oct 2018. Then they relied on him as the 3rd shooter in the SO. He missed the net entirely. Trotz defended the decision, saying Ladd had been 18/50 in the SO prior to that.

Oilers and Flames coming up the next few nights. Isles outside of the playoff picture, with with games in hand on some teams. I was bored at lunch today and ran projections. Isles are "on pace" to finish with like 96.7 points and take WC2 (including projecting everyone else in the east).

Perhaps this should go in an "off-season" thread???

Anyway. Lou and the Isles gave fans a chance to ask questions, and gave us some stuff to discuss. https://www.nhl.com/islanders/news/isles-inbox-lou-lamoriello/c-316244088

Of obvious importance- injury updates. Cizikas and Boychuk will be ready when play resumes (this year or next). Pelech is out until training camp, again, whether than's at a normal time or delayed.

All indications are that Sorokin is coming over next year. This is HUGE for the Isles, especially since both Greiss and Varlamov have performed a tandem Donkey Show all season long. Okay, parts of the season. Trouble is, they both get hot or cold at the same time. Last year Greiss and Lehner did amazingly well to yin-yang on hot streaks, keeping the team level all year long.

Lou says he intends to lock up Barzal prior to July 1st, but would match any offer sheet. That's a big statement if he doesn't get the deal done beforehand. Should have just left it at not letting him get to July 1st.

What about Pulock? Could be in for a long term deal.

Read the rest. Someone else asked if Lou planned to sign Pulock, Toews & Barzal. Lou said yes to all 3, saying they planned to have it all done before July 1st. Nobody asked about matching if those guys made it to July 1st though. But I certainly wouldn't expect him to say "nah, we're gonna let that guy walk" if there's any chance the season resumes. Imagine the fallout from such a thing?

Different Isles players and Trotz sharing short clips about how to stay busy, etc. Clutterbuck's is amusing. Glad to see his kid learned from dad's on-ice pest antics. And Bailey's is like every parent working from home these days.

Sorokin is coming over. Reports say he refused to sign an extension in the K.

Thanks! I needed some good news today!
This all but assures Greiss won't be back, and I'm more than okay with that. For whatever reason he fell off big time and looked terrible since December.
The assumption all along has been that Sorokin and good friend Varlamov will be a great tandem, with Varlamov being #1 next year while Sorokin learns the North American game, they'll split time the following year, and then Sorokin with be #1 in the last year of Varlamov's contract. Maybe Sorokin takes over sooner... But that's a nice long term plan.

He has to wait until 4/30 to sign, since his contract runs through then.

Found this:
Quote:
Sorokin and Igor Shesterkin are close friends. Shesterkin once jokingly told me he's looking for a rivalry with Ilya to learn who's the king of NY. They regularly play NHL20 for Isles and Rangers respectively. A week ago Igor told me he's OK to be a driver of Ilya so he'd come https://t.co/8WLjdmn4b1

That's pretty funny.

No word on Sorokin's contract situation, but the Isles signed Samuel Bolduc today to an entry level deal. 6'4", 211 lb D-man.

Today was the 1st day Sorokin could sign, so maybe a deal is coming soon. Although Lou always says to use time if you have it.

The other Sebastian Aho gave an interview in Sweden where he supposedly said he's disappointed he hasn't gotten a real shot on Long Island yet. They're pretty deep on defence so maybe they should deal him before he decides to stay home.

I agree with him. I thought they were going to bring him up when Pelech got hurt. Instead they gave Dobson more of a chance, which makes sense too. But when they traded for Greene (whose name I just had to LOOK UP it's been so long), it pretty much sealed Aho's fate with the Isles. They're deep on D. But this summer may see one of Boychuk or Leddy moved to save cap space in order to bring back Toews, Pulock and Barzal. So Aho may get a chance going forward. Supposedly Lou said at some point this season that he wanted to keep Dobson with the Isles, preferring him to learn the NHL game and play sporadically, rather than go back to junior and play way too many minutes. I never saw that but lots of Isles fans say they did. shrug.

No word at all on Sorokin. Lou always says to use time if you have it. I guess he's using it all...

No movement on the Sorokin front, but rumor is that is because they are waiting to see what happens with this year. Sorokin would love for this year to continue and he'd be able to burn a year of his ELC and get paid far more next year. It could be what keeps him in Russia.

Unfounded news- Sorokin may not come over to the Isles at all, according to Art Staple, who many say doesn't have a source for that news. Many feel he's just trying to get clicks.

Good news- Belmont construction began again yesterday.
Better news- Adam Pelech is cleared to skate and is almost certain to be back for the qualifying round. That will be huge.

Prospect signings: Felix Bibeau, Cole Coskey and Blade Jenkins have all agreed to terms on contracts.
Jenkins was a few days away from being back in the draft. Glad he's not.

NHLPA is picking up the fight to essentially help guys like Sorokin burn a year of their ELC. It impacts a few other teams similarly. So maybe it'll work out. I can't really see the Isles having him play in the playoffs unless Varlamov and Greiss really stink or 1 gets hurt.

I noticed teams are actually okay nowadays with not letting contracts slide and burning entire years for just a few games. In the long run it saves them money. The mentality used to be to extend control over a player as long as possible, but if you burn a year, they'll have maybe two years of NHL production to bring to the table instead of three. Makes a big difference, especially if both sides want to avoid a bridge deal and just do a long-term contract.

The issue with Sorokin is that he could stay in the KHL and make a ton of money. He's already a proven star over there, winning a championship. The Isles want him over here for next year, and from his side, why should he play for like $900k vs probably $6-8 million over there? So they'll let him burn this year at a lower price if it's the price to get him here. If he signs over there, it's probably going to be for a few years and the Isles won't get him. Supposedly getting Sorokin here was the main reason for letting Lehner go to sign Varlamov. Idea is that they let Greiss walk this year and next year have Varlamov as #1 with Sorokin backing him up and learning the NHL. Next year they're more 1a & 1b, then Sorokin has 2 years with Varlamov as his safety net/backup, or if Sorokin shows he's the real deal, they could even deal Varlamov for a cheaper backup.

Sorokin in early talks to return to CSKA. :chairshot:
This may just be because the NHL rule is dragging shit out and he wants to make sure he has a place to play next year. Not sure of the KHL rules, like if he's a UFA or RFA.

Rumor out of Russia is that Sorokin and CSKA are working on a 1 year deal in case he can't come over for this year. That could fuck the Isles, because I believe he can come over as a UFA then. This looks like the league is just trying to fuck the Isles out of having a good goalie.
