Err, is it me or is $6.8M per year a bucket load of money to be paying a restricted free agent? If I'm not mistaken this contact would make Doughty amongst the top paid Defensemen in the NHL.

Something ain't right here.

Don Meehan, who apparently has a bit of history with Lombardi.

Oh well, it's a holdout. Not the first, certainly won't be the last, but it'd be a real shame to see the Kings AND Doughty miss a real shot at the Stanley Cup because of this.

ah- Nabokov's agent as well. I've read that he's a nice guy, but he's looking like a real shithead from those 2 incidents.

Anze Kopitar got $6.8m as a RFA from Lombardi, and he wasn't ever nominated for a major award. Lombardi also caved on Jack Johnson, giving him about $1m more per year than any sane person ever should.

That he's taking a hard line with Doughty just shows outright incompetence.

Maybe, and it seems pretty dumb quibbling over a few hundred K. But Doughty didn't help his case by showing up out of shape last year and having a pretty dismal first half. Lombardi is in a weird spot - he knows Doughty will be one of the best, but he took a step back last year so do you really want to reward that? Both sides have said they have no interest in a one year deal but maybe that makes the most sense. Get Doughty playing this year and let him earn $7m+ in a long term deal.

Dustin Byfuglien had a big first half last year, signed for big money, and then had an absolutely god-fucking-awful second half of the year in which he apparently gained over 20 lbs while playing a full hockey schedule. Good or bad halves should be treated as just that. Doughty was LA's best player down the stretch and in the first round vs. Vancouver. Is there anything about Drew that really raised red flags? Poor conditioning to start one season (which was after an admittedly long one for him, BTW, what with the Olympics thrown in and all).

Lombardi consistently has these contract holdouts. It's a pattern. I find it way easier to see Lombo as the renegade here and not Doughty. It's how he does business.

Is Dion Phaneuf's case not perhaps in the back of Lombo's mind as well? Dion looked well on his way to becoming a franchise player (he arguably was one for a season and a bit) and regressed after signing his big deal.

Just heard that not only is Doughty gonna miss time from the Rinaldo hit, but Dustin Penner left practice early today due to injuries in the fight sustained thereafter. BOTH are on my OTP $ team.

Damn you Rinaldo. Damn you.
