KC won with bullpen, contact hitting, defence and smart baserunning.
SF won with bullpen, defence, smart baserunning and contact hitting.

Anyways, congrats to the Royals. I respect the team.

As for the rest of us, free agency is going to be nuts. Wouldn't shock me if we see a lot of trades too, if teams can't get their lineups sorted out by throwing FA bucks around.

Price and Greinke are going to get paid. Zack will go back to LA, I think. Watch Price go with Boston or New York.

I interview ex-Grantland and Expos book writer Jonah Keri. Told me a funny Pedro Martinez story: http://cultmontreal.com/2015/11/expos-jonah-keri/

RIP former Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson. Only 29.

Was pitching on the Giants AAA team last year and wasn't too bad.

Free agency truly begins now: Price to Boston for seven years, 217M. The other big arm to sign was Zimmermann with DET.

Piazza and Griffey Jr. are going to the Hall of Fame. No Raines for a ninth year of eligibility.

Whether you think they are hall-of-famers or not, Carlos Delgado off of the ballot after last season, Jim Edmonds is off of the ballot this year while Billy Wagner earned enough votes to stay on and Hoffman garnered 67 fucking %. Lee Smith still on it. Trammell is off of the ballot now. What a fucking joke.

Larry Walker is still on it, which is good. Hopefully Raines finally gets in next year.

On Edmonds:

Just when I thought I couldn't like Brisbee's writing more than I already do, he mentions Robert Fripp of King Crimson in a baseball article.

http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2016/2/16/1 ... amondbacks

Quote:
Yasmany Tomas is taking over for Ender Inciarte, a defensive swap that's like Fred Durst taking over lead guitar duties for Robert Fripp. That might be a tortured analogy, but it sure gives me the excuse to leave this here:

The Giants just mortgaged the future to win their fourth WS this decade. They had the best record at the all-star break, but have been struggling of late.

They added a fourth SP in Matt Moore, a LHP in Will Smith and a new starting 3B in Eduardo Nunez. All three are young and under team control for a few years, so they're not rentals.

Out: Duffy, Susac, 6-million dollar kid Fox, Mejia, Bickford. They managed to hang on to their real prospects: Arroyo and Beede.

Rox are still somehow in the mix, which is astounding. Perhaps as a result, they didn't sell at the deadline. Some criticized the brass for holding onto players like Carlos Gonzales Jorge de La Rosa, but at the very least they didn't pull an Avs and make some moves to beef up for a maybe-playoff run.

Talk is that the Rockies want to keep CarGo but put him at first base, making room for prized prospect David Dahl, who's had a pretty damned good start in the majors thus far.

Is Beede on your list of favorite players already?

They let him use his fastball again in AA: 6-6, 3.26 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 90 K, 108 IP

I meant because he was drafted by the Jays and didn't sign and ended up drafted by the Giants ;)

They weren't letting him use his fastball before?

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Same with the recently traded Bickford, no?

When Beede came up last year, they had him use more splits/sinkers to induce grounders, I think because he was having issues repeating his delivery. This year they've let him go and his fastball is back up to 94 MPH.

I forgot that about Bickford, but then again I don't follow prospects too closely so it doesn't surprise me I that I don't remember it. I remember Beede because a number of Jays fans were pretty pissed off that he turned down a huge $2M+ signing bonus to go to Vandy.

Mark Teixeira announced the other day that he'll retire at the end of the year.
Not to be outdone, A-Roid has announced that he'll retire at the end of next week.

The Yankees just dumped a shit-ton of salary.

But I find it really weird that A-Roid would retire so damn close to 700 home runs. I guess he knows everyone is just going to question how many were steroid-assisted whether he gets 696, 700, 715...

Yeah I don't get the timing of the A-Rod thing at all.

My first thought: He failed a drug test and this is a way to leave quietly.
