Got back Sunday from my annual white water rafting trip, once again doing the Kennebec river in Maine
It is somewhat sad how small the group is getting, however expected it may be
i'm only in my 5th season, and this group has been coming up for something like 16+ years
At one point, they had 70+ rafters/campers, with 12+ rafts just for their group
this year there were only 19 rafters (3 rafts) in our group (many more campers who were not rafting)
there were also many rafters there not in our group, but at one time our's was one of two groups that weekend
the upside is getting to meet new people who wouldn't be there otherwise
The other group that's been there from the beginning is the New Hampshire firemen
One of them brought his bagpipes, and he did a tribute for a friend of ours (and former rafter) which was very nice
One upside of the smaller group is I actually got to be in one of the "feature" rafts this year
ie, as Peter Griffin would say, " We have 4 or 5 of the main characters on board, I doubt anything bad is going to happen"
Unfortunately, I found out that the "veteran" rafters don't like to actually paddle, preferring to let the guide do the work, while they drink
At one point, all of our paddles were stacked in a pile in the center of the raft
It's all good, it was a lot of fun, especially the drinking games at the campsite
I'll keep going back as long as possible, if only to see these people again that I only see once a year
