To do this during a mostly 30 team league is nuts. It'll never happen again. Take a bow, Wings.

Yup, it's a pretty incredible accomplishment.

I was 8 years old the last time this team missed the playoffs.

I'm trying to track down when I really started to be an Yzerman/Wings fan. I'm 99% sure it happened with the hockey card boom in 90-91. Not sure if it was earlier than that with the sticker books. I distinctly remember the Upper Deck cards and a couple of holograms.

Mom's got a picture from Feb 92 of me wearing a cross-stitched Red Wings sweatshirt. 9 years old at that point.

This was the first game that I saw live. We brought our trappers and got on TV. I thought Yzerman had 4 assists in that game, but it was a goal, 2 assists and 1st star. I've got the ticket stub somewhere.

School after the 1993 playoffs was pretty brutal.

Hell of a run. Sorry to see it end. Amazing accomplishment, especially in the modern NHL. There was only 21 teams last time they missed! Wood sticks. Aluminum sticks. Old school goalie ,aka Jason Vorhees, masks (few, but there!) It's almost a blessing that Gordie Howe & Mike Illitch passed before the streak ended.

Ah, I knew someone would have an official list of NHL changes since the last time (although it's missing some obvious stuff, like the equipment changes):

Incredible run. I thought, when the Wings switched to the East, that it'd help sustain it, but I think it had the exact opposite effect.

Everyone underestimates the Eastern Conference.

Yeah, some Eastern teams have really ratcheted it up, but I also think the West has faltered badly, especially this year. St. Louis, Dallas, and L.A. all took major steps back this year. I think if Detroit were still in that old Central Conference they'd have had a very legitimate chance at keeping the streak alive.

And I never would've guessed it, but fellow Western transplant COLUMBUS is suddenly a powerhouse.

I think goaltending is a big reason the East is strong right now. In the Metro alone there's Holtby, Henrik and Bob.

Who's the best goalie in the West? Dubnyk, followed by ????

In West Crawford + Darling. Honestly, Bernier has been amazing filling in for Gibson of late. But yeah, no clear runaway.

You forgot about Carey in the East.....
