The poor man's Ken Dryden. Lotta hype there.

Obviously we know who the better player was, but in terms of being a team president, Ken only wishes he were as successful as JD. I don't think that it's a coincidence that both the Blues and Blue Jackets righted the ship under him. Whether he can keep James Dolan in line remains to be seen but he's got a very good track record thus far. The good news is that JD probably won't be expected to help out with the perpetual train wreck that is the Knicks.

Oh yea, totally forgot Ken had a brief tenure as Leaf team President. Was more referring the the playing and media stuff. No question the train wreck he was with hockey management.

Wait, train wreck in management? He was hired in May of 1997, signed Joseph and Pat Quinn, and the Leafs completely turned things around. 2 semis appearances and 6 straight playoffs. He was eventually pushed out, but he set things in motion as president and the Leafs were successful for a while under his watch.

Then, there was this.

http://www.espn.com/nhl/columns/story?id=1804965

Quote:
When it was revealed shortly after Dryden took over that venerable Maple Leaf Gardens had been the site of a series of sexual assaults on young boys during the Harold Ballard era, Dryden became the conscience of an organization that was prepared to ignore the entire issue. While ownership hid behind legalese and denial, Dryden stepped forward. When one of the victims committed suicide by jumping off the Bloor Street Viaduct in downtown Toronto, Dryden called the family and asked to attend the funeral. He helped set up conferences and clinics that shone a light on the issue of abuse instead of tucking it away in a dark corner.

If JD helps the Rangers get Bread, that would suck.

That would be the Rangers to a T though. Start the rebuild properly, make progress and develop guys, then jump at the first sign of a shiny new toy on the free agent market or trade.

Yes it would. But Panarin and Bobrovsky are supposedly a package deal. The Rangers can't take on a 3rd goalie. And if Panarin hates it that much in Clumbus, does he place any blame on Davidson?

I think they'll take the money where they can get it. They can hang out at BBQs in the summer.

You'd think the Jax would want to counteract Panarin, Bob, JD, Duchene and Dzingel leaving by locking up Werenski, but nah.

3 years, 15M for Werenski. That sucks for Columbus.

It's funny, McAvoy signed a very similar deal in Boston and it's being viewed as a steal. I think it comes down to the team's respective situations. Lumbus has a ton of cap room right now so they could afford to go big and long-term, but Boston could not. Both players will have to be qualified at $7 million, so that's gonna be the starting point for negotiations. Both players won a huge concession there.

Exactly. Boston wants to win now and needs to get guys under the cap. Columbus needed to throw a bone to fans that they can encourage guys to stay. Same deal, different results.

The Jackets are being left for dead by pundits. Dubinsky goes on LTIR, which is probably an addition by subtraction at this point.

Texier-PLD-Atkinson
Nyqvist-Wennberg-Bjorkstrand
Foligno-Jenner-Anderson
Lilja-Nash-Bemstrom
Milano

Werenski-Jones
Murray-Savard
Kukan-Nutivaara
Harrington, Gavrikov

Joonvis

Depleted upfront and in net, the defence remains solid. Lots of young-ish players with potential. Torts might get the kids to buy in, or not.

The Jackets have been on fire, but now Seth Jones is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. Bad timing.

Mikhail Grigorenko's agent says he signed a one-year deal in Columbus.

Tortorella is going to love him!

I will always respect Mikhail Grigorenko for this one reason: back in 2012, I interviewed him at the CHL awards for a draft profile. When I next saw him at a pre-draft event, I asked if he'd read the story.

"Yes."

Did you like it?

"No."

I've quietly rooted for him ever since.

One of the most awful moves the Avs made in that fateful offseason of 2016 was signing Joe Colborne when they already had the same exact player in Mikhail Grigorenko. Slow, lanky, talented, but also soft. And I'm averse to using that word since it gets WAY overused, but in this case, it fits. Dude's a complete and total perimeter player, which kinda negates the skill and hockey smarts he possesses.

I imagine he'll give the Jax fans some hope during preseason and then show his true colors. And uh, yeah, I give the over/under on him landing in Torts' doghouse at 5 games.

That's exactly what's going on here. Columbus tried to fast track to the offseason and the league said hell no. He'll sign in C-Bus July 1.
