Holy crap...I actually get to make one of these!

Corey Pronman ranks the Avs' farm system 2nd (!!!) in the league.

https://theathletic.com/1181315/2019/09 ... avalanche/

Avs may also FINALLY have a legit goalie prospect. Justus Annunen just got a contract extension from Karpat (which, if I'm not mistaken, is Jesse Puljujärvi's current team) according to this post from HF User murzu (Finnish dude):

Quote:
Kärpät extended Annunen for two more years, the contract ends 2021-2022.

"Justus is an extremely talented young goalie, whose game has been on a good level both in SM-Liiga and CHL (Champions Hockey League). He is from this area and we wish that he will be our goalie for many years. He has been drafted to the NHL and time will tell when we goes there", sports director/manager (GM of sorts I guess) of Kärpät, Harri Aho told in a briefing.

Looks like Bowen Byram is a lock for Canada's WJC roster, but Alex Newhook was cut.

Bo Byram was not moved at the WHL trade deadline, which means it's sink or swim for the Vancouver Giants, who have had a not-great season based on what I've read. They're likely a first-round exit from the playoffs, which means he could be available for an AHL ATO, which would help the Colorado Eagles immensely.

Alex Newhook, n his freshman season at Boston College, was named the Hockey East rookie of the week after registering three points (G, 2A) as the Eagles split a pair of games against UMass last week.

Newhook, the 2019 Colorado Avalanche first-round draft pick, is tied for eighth among all NCAA freshmen in scoring with 16 points (7G, 9A) in 18 games for Boston College, fourth in the Division One rankings.

The 18-year-old forward (he turns 19 later this month) has at least one point in 10 of his last 12 games.

Article on Eagles head coach Greg Cronin, who appears to be doing quite well in Loveland both in turning the AHL affiliate into a winner and developing talent for the parent club.

Someone on HF ranked the Avs prospects based off of DGB's "universal rankings" and...holy shit.

So...
1. Bryam/Newhook
2. Kaut
3. Ranta
4. Timmins
5. Bowers
6. Werner
7. Zhuravlyov
8. Kovalenko
9. 2020 3rd Round Pick
10. Beaucage

Even the honorable mentions are on point!

Logan O'Connor
Matthew Stienburg
Justus Annunen
Anton Lindholm
Tyler Weiss
Nate Clurman

Avs sign top goaltending prospect Justus Annunen to an ELC.

https://milehighsports.com/avalanche-si ... -contract/

Nice to see a legit goalie prospect or two in the system. The last time the Avs had a homegrown starter was David Aebischer, and obviously he wasn't wildly successful.

Avs lose former draft pick, Notre Dame forward Cam Morrison, to the Hawks, who just seem to collect college and Euro free agents.

A lot of grumbling was made about the Avs 2014 draft class, which was indeed so disastrous (not one single, solitary NHL player) it cost longtime draft guru Rick Pracey his job. But 2016 was nearly as bad. First pick is Tyson Jost, who has developed into a good-ish 3rd liner. Expectations were way, way higher. Morrison was the next pick at 40th overall...and now they literally get nothing out of it. I think they were hoping for a power forward type, and he's probably going to be more of a 3rd line scoring option. Not a huge loss, but it still sucks, especially because the Avs still kinda struggle with their net-front presence. Morrison was chosen precisely because that's what he brings to the table. I don't blame him one bit for not signing in Colorado--the path to the NHL was a little clearer with a rebuilding team like Chicago.

Now that 2016 draft class has Jost and fifth-round pick, goalie Adam Werner, who is set to be the starter for the Colorado Eagles next season...whenever the hell that's going to be.

Avs have been more reluctant to let European prospects play on loan for overseas clubs than other franchises. They're still not allowing Martin Kaut to do so, even though he's been practicing with his old team Pardubice in Czechia. I imagine they're just waiting, why I'm not entirely sure.

Fun stuff. Nikolai Kovalenko, taken in the 6th round by the Avs in 2018 and son of former Avs player Andrei, might be a find.

Avs fans are paying close attention to the upcoming WJC with both Bowen Byram and Alex Newhook set to play big roles.

Avs fans are keeping an eye on the NCAA tournament as some very important prospects are still playing.

He may not be the best one in the mix, but Sampo Ranta has gone from being a third round afterthought in 2018 to a viable power forward and tour de force for Minnesota. If he opts to return for his senior season, that would be bad, but if Joe can turn on the charm and offer up the $$$ after his season concludes, that would be a huge get.

Alex Newhook remains the "2nd line center of the future" and has been great despite suffering a pretty serious shoulder injury in the WJC. To a lesser extent, his BC teammate Drew Helleson remains a nice depth option on defense.

Alex Newhook signed his ELC this week.

https://www.nhl.com/avalanche/news/aval ... -323115906

Didn't have the most fun collegiate/WJC experience thanks to injuries and COVID, but I imagine he's ready to make the jump. Avs will likely keep him in the AHL this year though. Come October, when everyone hopes the 2021-22 season will begin, he will be an Avalanche player.

Aaaaaaand of course the Colorado Eagles had their weekend slate of games postponed due to the Bakersfield Condors entering the protocol. So, it'll have to wait.

Newhook's first pro game was meh, second one was awesome though. Goal and an assist. I don't think we'll see him in an Avs uniform this year but you never know. His first ELC year is burned regardless so they don't have to worry about that, but I think it'd take quite a few injuries (which one can never rule out when it comes to the Avs) for him to make it onto the active NHL roster.

The real pleasant surprise this year has been Jean-Luc Foudy, Liam's bro, and he only made it onto the AHL roster as an 18-year-old because the OHL was shut down. Hasn't logged a ton of points or anything but by all accounts looks like he belongs. It's nice that the Avs are finally starting to hit better on some draft picks outside of the first round.

Youth movement is in full swing in Colorado--Justin Barron signs his ELC. I'm guessing he starts next season in the AHL, but if he's anywhere near as good as he was in the Q this season, he won't be there long.

This in addition to Sampo Ranta, Jean-Luc Foudy, and Alex Newhook already on the farm team. Martin Kaut is with the big club and trying to carve out a role, and who even knows about Shane Bowers. But at least there are legit prospects in the mix as opposed to some low-ceiling guys who never really had a chance at being NHLers.

The drafting is still not near good enough IMO, but this is a monumental improvement over Rick Pracey's disastrous post-2009 tenure.

It's NEWFIE TIME!

Alex Newhook set to make his NHL debut against the Sharks tonight. Odds are he'll be taking Brandon Saad's spot on Kadri's left wing.

The future shift continues...Finnish goalie Justus Annunen, arguably the Avs' top prospect at that position, has officially joined the Eagles in Loveland.

Bowen Byram talked with the media for the first time since going down with injury that was very obviously a concussion, sustained when that shitstain Keegan Kolesar took a run at him in a game earlier this season. So he's good to go, we'll see if he rotates into the lineup--I'm guessing it'll be at the expense of Conor Timmins, but it should be at the expense of Patrik Nemeth, who wasn't horrible by any means but not really good either.

Anyway, Avs sign 2019 third rounder Alex Beaucage, who isn't a blue-chip prospect but could be one to watch. He had a fantastic season in the Q this year, with 28 points in 22 regular season contests, and then 17 points in 10 playoff games. There's no question of his talent--he has the hands and an elite-level shot that could get him in the show. But his skating remains a huge, huge question mark.

The Colorado Eagles will be fun to watch next year--they weathered a tough season like all AHL teams did, and will be able to ice a pretty deep roster next go-around. Quite a few prospects who have NHL upside (Ranta, Beaucage, Barron, Annunen) are all expected to be in Loveland in 2021.
