This guy is descending into madness. First with his guarantee. Now with his over the top off the board selection of Mark Jankowski...no offense to the kid but Feaster about fell over himself to select him all the while trading down........????????????????????and then gushed to the media about this guy being the steal of the draft......in 10 years......WTF!

It's the classic overselling a guy because they knew picking him would be controversial strategy.

I suppose we're finally getting a glimpse into what kind of GM John Weisbrod might be. I've always found him to be an interesting story since he walked away from a sizeable contract offer to continue as an NBA GM to pursue his dream in the NHL and has toiled as a scout for years since. Feaster said repeatedly it was Weisbrod who scouted Jankowski and insisted they not trade the pick and take him.

Well....before he joined the Flames last year he was a scout with the Bruins since 06.

I guess somehow I missed that.....

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=567456

Anyway....that's fine whoever puts their stamp on it. At least he and Weisbrod were excited. But you aren't going to see me jumping up and down screaming about the best pick in the draft 10 years from now.

I don't think I will ever understand how trading down helps the team now...but perhaps that's not the point since none of these selections will be ready within the next 2 years......Yikes....this team is going to stink for the time being!

It must be tough being a GM knowing your team is and will be a turd stack for several years. I guess you really don't have anything left to do but get excited about 5 years from now! Let the drawn out rebuilding begin! Toke away Jay!

Round 1: Mark Jankowski (C)

Round 2: Patrick Sieloff (D)

Round 3: Jon Gillies (G)

Round 4: Brett Kulak (D)

Round 5: Ryan Culkin (D)

Round 6: Coda Gordon (LW)

Round 7: Matthew Deblouw (C)

Sieloff, Gillies, Culkin and Gordon have some solid tools to work with. But not a lot of offensive upside in general, Gordon has skill but is slow, that's why he went so late.

Is Backlund going to be back? Is he even alive?

Culkin's a good pick. Could become a decent bottom-pairing guy, which is pretty decent in that spot. I feel like he's not that far off from that.

So the Flames re-sign Backlund to a one year, $725,000 deal. A low-risk, potentially high reward contract if he can manage to stay healthy.

More on this.....

Quote:
”I’ve just seen the guy who’s going to be – 10 years from now – he’s going to be talked about as the best player in this draft.” A bit later on, Weisbrod himself said, “He’s Joe Nieuwendyk.”

Ok......yeah I can make fun of the Flames staff.....why you ask? Because this club is delusional! The management has been delusional for years.....while this kid may be the next coming of Joe Nieuwendyk...10 f'n years from now......what about now? Does that mean we just puff on the roach of Jarome and Kipper's career until then? 2004 was a long time ago owners....those red mile bandwagon riders have long since moved on in life.

Here's to another Young Guns campaign!

This team blew their wad on Roman Cervenka....he better play well.

Ten years? Wow... So they draft a guy in the hopes that they can hang on to him through his development? Wow...

Ten years. I'm reminded of that great scribe Rudy Kelly, who pontificated on 10 years when trying to ponder Jonathan Quick's new contract:

http://www.battleofcali.com/2012/6/30/3 ... -we-expect

Quote:
Jonathan Quick signed a 10-year contract, which is... a really fucking long time. 10 years ago the United States was fighting in Afghanistan, and now... wait, fuck. The point is, that's a long fucking time. A lot of shit can happen in 10 years. You'll probably die in the next 10 years, for example.

And this in itself is quite delusional. The Flames front office changes so damn fast it makes heads spin. I can't remember anyone they have hung onto besides Brent Krahn  . I wouldn't trust the prior development staff to find their ass with both hands much less groom a guy for 10 years! Good luck Weisbrod and Conroy!

Maybe I need to let it go......but track record indicates these guys are smoking the good stuff and I for one......am not buying it. Sure he'll be great in 10 years.....just not with this club. You can take that to the bank.

And when he's inducted into the HHOF Weisbrod and Feaster will both be dead and not there to gloat.

Calgary is letting Steve Begin attend on a PTO. Statistically speaking he's the best guy on faceoffs in camp. That should tell you how hard-up the Flames are for centers.

Hiring a Stanley Cup-winning coach was a bad thing?
