First notable claim appears to be Spencer Martin to Lumbus. Wonder why...is Elvis hurt again?

Geez, there are a LOT of notable names teams are trying to sneak through the waiver wire. Highly-touted prospects have a shorter window to impress than ever these days.

So many guys on waivers. You could build a half decent team just from waiver guys. That means we probably won't see too many claims because rosters are tight as is.

Were there any claims? Like half the league has cap problems.

Ross Johnston claimed by Anaheim. Not incredibly surprising. Brent Thompson is an assistant in Anaheim now and coached Johnston in Bridgeport. Thompson liked Johnston a lot. He'll protect Anaheim's young guys. Johnston typically looks like a good 4th liner for a few games, then looks like an average one, then well below average. If used in a cycle of like 3 games in, 3-5 out, he'd have good numbers. Seems once he gets comfortable that he's going to stay in the lineup he becomes less effective. At least that's what I saw for a few years.

There were actually a surprising amount this cycle. I'd say that, yes, there are cap problems, but there are also injury problems. That's what prompted the Avs to snag Ivan Prosvetov from Arizona.

Jakub Vrana about to be waived by St. Louis, clearly dude has some off-ice issues that need to be dealt with. A shame too because he's a phenomenal talent when he's on.

Adam Ruzicka by Calgary. Still just 24, big centre. Had one offensive hot streak last year but otherwise doesn't light the lamp much. Have a feeling he'll get claimed.

Penguins postseason hero Nick Bonino waived by the Rangers. Even just last year was an effective defensive pivot, but now appears to be done.

Evgeny Kuznetsov passes through waivers and it appears he'll play for Hershey, making him the highest paid AHL player ever.

I think the Caps were really hoping he wouldn't report so they could suspend/terminate his contract. But he won't let them off that easily.

Well, if this doesn't scream WE'RE CLEARING ROOM FOR JAKE GUENTZEL in Carolina I don't know what will.

All these guys got waived just now.

Brendan Lemieux (CAR)
Tony DeAngelo (CAR)
Antti Raanta (CAR)

William Lagesson (TOR)
Jordan Oesterle (CGY)
Boris Katchouk (CHI)
Evan Cormier (FLA)
Tobias Bjornfot (VGK)

Calgary got a little busy the other day, reclaiming Matthew Philips and also claiming defenseman Joel Hanley from Dallas.

Nashville also claimed Jaret Anderson-Dolan from Los Angeles, the longtime prospect finally exits the Kings organization, hopefully he finds his footing with the Preds.

I had to do a double take on this.....as no f'n way Matthew Phillips would be happy about a return to Calgary. So to clarify Phillips was claimed by Pittsburgh and then Washington Claimed him back.
