No surprising names as of yet.

http://nhlnumbers.com/2016/10/3/highlig ... 16-edition

I count three former Avs in this batch, and if you click on Willis's previous day's waiver article, there's another former Av (Guenin) and a former Avs prospect (Bournival).

Amazingly, Jeff Schultz is still in professional hockey.

Oilers should pick up the Wiz. Cut by TBay but he was getting good reviews.

Lightning place both Cory Conacher and Erik Condra on waivers. The former isn't surprising, the latter most definitely is.

RW Teemu Pulkkinen - 24 years old and 34 goals in 46 AHL games, can't see him making it through waivers.

Canucks are looking at him. Rocket of a shot.

Nope he's Wild. Strange move on the part of Detroit. Seems like they should have either found room on the roster or traded him for a pick, I'm sure they could have got something.

Sven Andrighetto on waivers. Someone should pick him up. He was pretty decent for the Habs last year and has some untapped potential.

Etem gets waived by Canucks and picked up by his draft team the Ducks - full circle. Good luck with that.

Analytics folks like him. Not a great scorer but very good at driving play. Perfect 3rd/4th line guy.

Sven slides through. Rosters are tight right now. Good skater with a hard shot. He's one of those in-betweeners though: not quite a top- or bottom-6.

Michalek, Bernier and Jamie McBain all on waivers.

Michalek had some great stretches in SJ but always getting injured. Was part of the epic Thornton-Cheechoo line for a while.

Bernier also a former Shark (1st rounder I think?) but never really got traction.

Should be noted that Ben Smith was claimed by Toronto after getting waived in CO. Smith was once a 14-goal scorer in Chicago, and never quite lived up to that solid season thereafter. The guy certainly plays hard but he's a fringe NHLer at best. Avs ended up finding better players in Bourque and Bourque anyway, I don't think they're fretting this particular loss. I'm still a bit confused as to why Toronto put in a claim though.

My guess is to put Brown on a more offensive line replacing Michalek and then have Smith fill the roll that Brown had on the fourth line. Then they can leave all who are playing in the AHL where they are as it seems clear that is where they want them playing and developing at the moment. besides six rooks is enough.

Dylan McIlrath (NYR)
Magnus Paajarvi (STL)

First rounders that never panned out.

Somebody should take a chance on McIlrath. Def should not have been a first rounder but a solid crease-clearing bruiser and was improving but apparently hated by AV. Maybe Leafs?
