Well this is interesting, at least to me. The NFL and NHL are treated the same as charities and not taxed on their profits. Hope it comes to an end

They're listed as non-profit organizations. This isn't new news.

The NFL is an unincorporated association -- it doesn't even have the legal personhood to pay taxes if it wanted. I don't know what the NHL's legal status is, but presumably something similar.

However, saying "The NFL/NHL doesn't pay taxes" is completely disingenuous, because all of its constituent parts do. Every franchise, every owner, every coach, every player, every landowner on which a stadium sits, etc. Getting outraged about that like that is getting outraged that a holding company A pays nothing because profits are channelled through its parent SuperHoldCo instead. Doesn't matter. The income is taxed.

It just takes issue with the philosophical notion of a sports league being non-profit. I don't think the structure really matters, as long as the income gets taxed. And it does. You can always come to new calculations by playing around with the rules, but by far the simplest thing is to worry about taxing the income when it comes down to the people who receive it. (Which is why social democracies have high income tax rates but low corporate tax rates, for example).
