I assume the "unnamed" NHL team is the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He's been hired by the Oilers. Nearly 10 years of useful stats blog posts, mainly spent ripping the Oilers, are gone.

Conspiracy theory: How much of this hire was trying to shut down his criticism, I wonder? He would incluence some Oil fans with his work. Strikes me as the kind of move Lowe/MacT would do. Rather than figure out modern and alternative ways to actively try to improve the team, just go out and try to shut someone up who is bringing negative attention to the team and possibly influencing fans.

Hopefully someone has all of that great work archived.

DownGoesBrown of course had some great lines on it.

He was really looking at tactics in a new way this past year, highlighting the Oilers post-faceoff wins plays. The Oilers are really trying right now to find ways to increase their possession numbers, and wrongly over-emphasized winning draws, costing themselves positioning to do so and not being as effective as the rest of the NHL when they did win (or lose) a draw.

I think it's genuine. MacT talks a pretty good talk for this kind of stuff, and Eakins seems very receptive. They've hired some guys in the past (famously boasted they had hired a guy that calculates GVT, an attempted catch-all WAR type stat that is more useful for historical analysis than predictive) and made two major signings on July 1st mainly based on Corsi%: Pouliot and Fayne.

Dellow has been asking the why questions and I'm pretty sure it's of great interest to guys in the league. The Oilers don't have anything to stand on right now... they're five years into a tear-down and are trading guys for futures that they themselves had acquired as futures when they were dismantling their last playoff team. When you lose that much, you start to listen to your critics a bit more.

I was mostly non-serious about the conspiracy. Hell, if you can hire him and get more out of Yakupov, the investment will pay itself off many times over.

I read some of his post-draw stuff. Really good research.

Dellow used to always bemoan how the Oil used Yakupov on the PP (and later on draw positioning) as well. He probably wouldn't take the job without guarantees of Yak being given free reign!

Yeah, I remember seeing some of that work, which is why I wrote that :) I didn't mean to imply that it was Yak's fault.

So the guy that unearthed the 'Colin Campbell, Head of NHL Officiating, berates officials who penalize his kid' story now works for a NHL club.

They may shut down his website, but they can't take away all of Tyler's Oil criticism:

Apparently Alex Galchenyuk is going to have a ridiculous NHL career.

(Note, take these projections with a few heaps of salt)

Twitter abuzz since Extra Skater is now down. Was the site purchased by a NHL team (with Darryl Metcalfe hired)? Was it bought by the NHL? Did the NHL shut him down as per their new terms of usage which forbids spidering/harvesting info? Was he bought by a major media organization like TSN or Sportsnet or Yahoo! or ESPN? Is he just on vacation and his site crashed?

His site is a major reason why stats took off so much recently. Easy to use and understand, looked way sharper than all the other ones.

Shit...one downside of all these hires. If indeed he was hired.

You can't parse their stats pages? What about ESPN, TSN, etc?

So the Leafs picked up Darryl Metcalfe, the dude who runs extraskater, which is subsequently brought down; and Cam Charron, one of the Leafs' biggest critics for the past few years, wasn't he?

Apparently a new site is in the works to try to replace extraskater. Behindthenet is still online.

And everyone still hates Steve Simmons.

Leiweke seems convinced the Leafs purchase of Extra Skater means that those stats don't exist anymore for other GMs to use.... ES was something like the 4th such stats site to exist of its ilk, and the others are still there and now there's even more!

I'm sure Darryl can build something new for them to use that includes internal and better data but yeah, everyone still knows everyone's Relative Corsi and how they did against certain levels of competition and what not.

“there are players we have in our organization today whose numbers are off the chart good and whose character is just terrible. I don’t care how good your numbers are, if you have bad character, you are doomed for failure."

Hey way to shake up the room before anyone even gets in it this season Leiweke you air bag.

Kessel has some great numbers as well. That is the problem fans and media are going to have a field day claiming who he was talking about.
